I have a friend (no, really I do) who has at least $150,000+ in student loans to pay back. The job she's working at doesn't pay her enough; she has enough to pay her bills, but she lives at home. I feel so bad for her because she's getting depressed and I don't know what to tell her anymore. I didn't take out loans for college, so I can't understand what she's going through.
She's put them on forbearance but this is the last time she can do it and then she's going to go into default. They're wanting $800 a month from her, but there's no way she can survive on that and pay bills. What would you tell her, or for those of you who have student loans to pay back what do you suggest I tell her?
My friend has student loans to repay, any words of comfort?
She can try to talk to the lender. I know with some companies like Sallie Mae they have a plan for Hardship when you can't afford the amount you need to pay. Maybe the lender she has have the same thing. Has she consolidated?
The bottom line is that she can't go back and do things differently, the money is now owed. So try to keep her positive and she needs to make sure she know what other options are available to her.

Is she a doctor? Why did she take out $150K in loans?

Encourage her to call the company and work out a payment plan that will work for her. They will more likely be willing to work out a smaller payment for her and know that some money will be coming in towards repayment rather than have her default and/or stop paying altogether.
I also question how she racked up such a high debt! Didn't she apply for financial aid and scholarships? If she required that much schooling chances are she can find a better job that will pay more. She may need help understanding exactly what she is qualified to do.

She should have went to a more affordable school and should have thought about the reprocussions. There are lot of things she should have thought about....a better paying job field for the degree she was earning...caculated the amount she'd have to pay back and when....Sounds like she wasnt so smart about her loans. I really cant have an sympathy for her...I empathize her pain but I dont feel sorry. At some point you have to take responsibility for your actions.
That's what I would tell her. Maybe i'm too blunt and honest...but it sounds like a lot more ppl need to be that way.
